Wow, look at me go. Nothing in months. Clearly I'm spectacular.

I blame grad school. Too much homework. All the time. What kind of psycho makes homework due on Sundays anyway? Aaaaagh. Now if only I could get over my 'I don't sound smart or pretentious enough to post out here' complex for the message boards. Since I'm kind of failing at that participation grade stuff. A lot.

ALSO this weekend has been the Friends of the Library book sale and it's INSANE. Someday I will get pictures of it up on Facebook. Since I need to get onto Facebook to post pictures onto the FoL Lubbock group and page anyway. And try not to let the website suck me in with silly quizzes about what Disney villan I'm most like.

One question, though. WHY AREN'T THE NEW STAR TREK FANS BUYING MORE STAR TREK BOOKS?! I'd been counting on y'all and you fell down on your jobs. Star Wars is still selling better. Jeeze.
But a big thank you to the guy that came in yesterday afternoon looking for Stephen King's Dark Tower series and bought the volumes 1-5 set AND the wonky-sized paperback of volume 7 I had in Better Books. I'm glad I was there to make your day, and that you were so excited to find them. You restored my faith in Sci-Fi/Horror readers after that douchebag engineering student came through and made fun of every book except Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land.
A big thank you also to the last group of three that came in and bought a ton of Sci-Fi and seemed to want to come back today, and to every dad that brought their little kids back into my section and - intentionally or un - introduced them to a collection of worlds where magic does happen. You guys rock so much.

However, no thank you to some of the volunteers who keep trying to censor the erotica section. It was Boris Vallejo art, not sex. I had no idea that boobies were so OMG TEH RONG. And you couldn't see the naked man's penis on that magazine unless you pulled it down and held the mag really close to your face. Seriously, gaiz.

First order of business: I have (finally!) updated my RP character list, which can be found here. Most of my pups have moved on the Retired list, but I am certainly up for playing them on AIM by request. And possibly doodling them.

Second order of business: My vacation last week rocked, and I come bearing movie reviews.

Terminator: Salvation- I'd like to start this review by saying that I do love Christian Bale. He's a great actor and he's fun to watch. But he shouldn't have been cast in the role of John Conner. It's a good movie, true, but if you go I would pay more attention to three members of the supporting cast - Helena Bonham Carter, Moon Bloodgood, and Sam Worthington. I would also recommend taking this review with a grain of salt, since I'm part of the camp that feels this series should have stopped with Judgement Day.

Drag Me to Hell- As a horror movie fan, I always look forward to new films in my favorite genre. As a fan of director Sam Raimi, I was stoked to see him return to his roots in campy horror flicks. If you're one that gets scared easily, I probably wouldn't advise you to see this. However, it's a fun romp with fantastic visuals and a generous dose of dark humor.

The Hangover- Ridiculously hilarious, and not as vulgar as you might think. However, it's still not one for the kids to see. Stay for a while as the credits roll to catch a little extra (and extra surprising) footage.

Night at the Museum: Battle for the Smithsonian- I saw the first movie on my birthday a couple years ago; it was like a bowl of chicken noodle soup on a chilly day. It had sort of restored my faith in children's movies, and I was very excited when I heard that a sequel was coming out. Battle for the Smithsonian, while not as good as the original, is still fun fare and worth a watch. The visuals are excellent, and some of the favorites from the first movie make a return.

Up- The other kid's movie on our list, and the better of the two, ranking in my personal Top 3 of the week. The visuals are stunning (and don't require 3D), and the story writing is superb. Dug the talking Dog adds a great deal of comic relief to the movie. But I would like to issue my first-ever TEAR-JERKER ALERT: take along a few tissues, because you might just start crying during this movie. Also of note is the short film that comes before the film, an adorable little romp about where babies of all sorts come from.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen- The Transformers are back, and back with a vengeance. This review will be woefully short, due to potential spoilers, but I can say this: Expect a few old friends... and a few old enemies. The visuals are magnificent, which makes up for the occasionally-garbled plot, and there are many more Transformers joining the ranks, though it means that many of them have their personalities left by the wayside. There's plenty of humor present, but I would advise against taking kidlets to the movie because of the kind of humor this turns out to be on many occasions. Though I have one character of special note: Jetfire, who is the most awesome Badass Grampa in the entire history of Badass Grampas. I don't care who you are, you will love him.

Gran Torino- One expects certain things from Clint Eastwood, whether he's acting or directing. Let me tell you, he once again delivers. There's quite a bit of humor, if you're willing indulge in that little racist part of you during the movie (yes, you're a little bit racist too; Avenue Q is totally right). It's a fascinating and strangely touching movie about a man who learns that not everyone in a subgroup is rotten to the core.

Spellbound- I will admit, I watched this documentary about the national spelling bee a couple weeks ago, but it deserves a mention on this list. It's an excellent movie, that leaves you wondering how you should feel about these children who have devoted so much time (sometimes against their wills) to the tricky and frustrating art of spelling words that nobody uses in casual conversation. There are triumphs and failures, and more than likely you'll find yourself cheering for several of these students.

Who Killed the Electric Car?- The second documentary on the list, this one is about the Electric Car. Specifically, a wave of them that hit the roads of California in the 1990s, and then just as suddenly disappeared. Several celebrities make appearances, and many experts and some of the owners of the cars speak about GMC's EV-1 line, and the corresponding cars from Ford, Honda, Toyota, and other companies. I have a TEAR-JERKER ALERT on this one as well: If you love the environment, or come to love these cars like I did during the film, their final destinations may make you cry.
As an almost unrelated sidenote, if you're planning on getting an electric car, for God's sake get a Tesla. They have more milage to the charge and they're gorgeous.

Later: maybe I'll finally review some TV shows if I remember to!

Okay, first off. Terminator: Salvation was decent, but I wouldn't bother seeing it in theaters. Some of the previewed movies looked much more interesting. And didn't have Christian Bale's epic shit-fit attached to them.
Instead of seeing that movie, you should go rent Fanboys. Let's face it, everyone can connect with Star Wars geeks and their epic battles against the Trekkies.

Second off. If I ever go to dinner and a movie again - which was offered by the guy I went with - I'm taking more people with me. Because I don't want to date now, and I don't want to date here, and I don't want anyone else assuming that I am dating, because I am not.
Also, I'm tired of this traditionalist 'dinner, movie, he drives, he pays' dating garbage. I would prefer to handle this like an attempted treaty between countries that don't get along; both parties meet in a neutral location with their allies with them. I demand a Geneva Convention, dammit!

Third off, Cate Blanchett is fucking gorgeous in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and I think girls are hot. There, I said it. Now I just need to grab a bull-horn and tell the people that know me IRL.
As a sidenote, Prowl and Starscream from the Transformers Animated series are also strangely hot. And have chins, which is different. Go watch them now.

Fourth, all of you should go to Forumwarz and sign up and friend Mercykiller. It's an internet game about the internet and totally meta and strangely addictive.

    <lj:music>"We Were Soldiers"</lj:music>

In the past few days, I've considered writing about a half-dozen things on this journal. I'd considered more reviews, talking about my life, talking about RP, and even bitching about RP. Roughly 20 minutes ago, I found a more important topic.

I woke up at 7:05 this morning, two hours before I normally do. I dragged out of bed and ate my breakfast, and pulled on a set of clothes, including a shirt that belongs to my father. You may be wondering why I would do this, and the answer is simple. There was a city council meeting this morning. On the agenda was a payraise for the police department, which has desperately needed a raise for the past two years and has not been given one. As some of you know, my father is an officer; he told my mom and I that the LPPA wanted officers and the family of officers to show up for the meeting, preferably in the department's shirt. We agreed to go.

We arrived at the city council hall shortly before 9:00 AM, to see every parking lot within walking distance clogged with cars, many of the patrol cars. There was a huge gathering of people outside, who filed into the building when it was open. My mom and I had a hard time finding a place to sit, but we did. We turned off our phones, and we waited.

The first part of the meeting was typical political stuff, handing out awards and what-not to other groups. About thirty minutes in, one of the council members, DeLeon, called to move up the two matters with the police department. The first - to let them make internet webisodes to boost recruitment - went through without a hitch. There was a unanimous decision for it, in fact.

The second matter was the one that everyone had shown up for. The seats were so packed that people were lined along the back walls shoulder-to-shoulder, and everyone was waiting. Before they announced it, one of the other council members started talking. He made a big speech about how he used to be an officer before he retired and how he understands what the police department is going through and how much he supports us. When DeLeon called for discussion, I belive that councilman was seconded someone's request to post-pone the proposal.

A vote was called for postponement. The only one that didn't want to was DeLeon.

So now we're all going to show up on May 14, because we're down by 60 officers and 100 more will be retiring by the end of the year.

I'm not in the mood to deluge my journal with my personal problems, so I thought I'd do a few reviews. It's a decent toss-up between books, movies, and CDs, just to keep everyone on their toes.

Bonk by Mary Roach - Mary Roach has written two other books (Stiff and its companion Spook), but did not go the route of death like the other two for this book. Rather than writing about cadavers or souls, she decided to write about sex and sex research. Needless to say, it was informing and entertaining, as all of her books are. However, if the candid discussion of genitalia bothers you, this may not be the book for you.

Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk - Another sex-related book, though this time fiction, Snuff delves into the porn industry. Naturally, with Chuck at the helm, it is almost as revealing as non-fiction with the added bonus of being entertaining while informing. It's a shorter read than some of his other novels, and easier to follow than his previous novel Rant, but it should be read with caution; sex is sex, and this book doesn't shy away from its every part, distasteful or not.

Sounds of the Universe - Depeche Mode's latest album. The most I can truly say is that it's extremely different from their other works. For me, this doesn't detract from it; frankly, I quite enjoy it. It might take a while for other Depeche Mode fan's to get used to, but is well worth picking up.

Role Models - It's one of those comedy movies that you either like or you hate. However, I think that anyone familiar with LARP and LARPing can find a way to enjoy it.

Darkon - In the vein of Role Models, in that it is about LARP. However, this is a documentary about a specific group known as Darkon. The people are very relatable, and the story is gripping even if there isn't a clear good guy or bad guy in the bunch. Must-see.

The King of Kong - A documentary for the gamer crowd, particularly those familiar with arcade games. It turns something as innocuous as the high score of Donkey Kong into a vicious battle of Good vs. Evil and Nerd vs. Nerd.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - Even Brad Pitt was unable to save this movie. If you ever feel the need to watch it, let me first warn you that you are about to lose three hours of your life that you will never get back. NEVER.

Like because some people are in radically different timezones, or some people can only get on IM at certain times of the day.

Dave Arneson, the creator of the entire idea of roleplaying and creator of the first campaign world ever, has passed away. He will be sorely missed.
On that note, I'm also going to say again that Fourth Edition DnD sucks balls. And if people can actually believe your April Fools joke of making a third Player's Handbook, you're doing something seriously wrong.

... and the Duggar family makes me die inside.

If none of you have ever heard Brentalfloss on YouTube, you've been missing out.
I haven't heard from any of my RL friends in <strike>almost</strike>exactly three months (and three days) now. Figure they either all jumped off of a cliff, or they don't want to talk to me.

I swear, werewolves are constantly getting the shaft. In paranormal romance, in movies, in television... They even get the shaft when they aren't competing with vampires!
Saturday
I graduated from college! Whoo!
And my brother got me a fucking IPHONE for graduation!
And my favorite uncle and favorite cousin came down to see it, too, which made me a happy little Naz.

Sunday
Blahed around the house and played with my new iPhone. And then we watched Hancock, which was very good and a rather interesting take on superheroes.

Monday

My mom and I went to Farwell to see my Nonnie; I thought it was going to be a total drag, but my uncle and cousin were still there, so we actually had a lot of fun. When we were leaving we also stopped by this place called the Apple Shack and got a box of Fuji apples.

The day was good, up until we started driving home. We were just outside of Shallowater, in the far east-bound lane to go home. We starting drifting off of the road, so I said something to my mom, and she jerked the wheel to get back onto the road.
At 70 miles an hour, the car overcorrected, spinning over the inside east-bound lane and into the median, where the car's wheels caught on the inside west-bound lane of traffic. The car started rolling, eventually stopping on the edge of the far west-bound lane, upside-down. Several cars stopped, including one that would have been hit by our Honda Accord if they hadn't sped up. The passengers of those cars helped us out of our car, and called 911.
After making sure that my mom was out of the car, I went over to her side of the car to extract the laptop I'm currently typing on; one side of the carrying case's strap had unclipped and wedged under her headrest.
EMS eventually showed up and took us to Covenant hospital in Lubbock, where my dad, brother, and his fiance were waiting for us.
They released me after about an hour - it was around 6 or 7 PM. We didn't have dinner at home until 11 PM, but my mom was released that night too, with several prescriptions for pain, nausea, etc. We both had bruises and scratches, but we were able to walk away, and for that I'm grateful.

Tuesday
My brother and his fiance took off from work to stay with my mom and I, mostly to keep my mom from trying to do the laundry or something. Nonnie and my uncle and cousin came down to see us (bringing banana nut bread with them), to make sure that we were okay. My brother and dad went out to the junkyard to see the car and retrieve the rest of our stuff from it; of the items that were in the car after the crash, we lost four plastic boxes, the Fuji apples (due to bruising and freezing), the Styrofoam cooler that's been around longer than I have, and two CDs. In a way, getting everything back kind of let the tension finally drain from me.
We watched Kate and Leopold because it's one of my feel-better movies and because my brother's fiance had never seen it (she likes it, btw). Then we got KFC.

My best friend, whom I'd called early in the day, finally got back to me, and kind of verbally wagged her finger at me when I told her about the wreck, since I hadn't called her when it happened. Was it really that wrong of me to not want to worry my RL friends? Or in fact my online friends, since the only one I e-mailed about it was Willa? Does it make me a bad person to want to spend that time with my family?

Wednesday
Most of the day I spent at home still, watching Season Two of Drawn Together. My mom went out with my dad to get a rental car and get her a new pair of glasses.

That night, since Wednesday was my Dad's birthday, we went out to eat. We went to Cancun, since the new Mexican place, Durango's, had to close because the geniuses at the DMV broke a water main. It was my first night out, and I kind of had several spazzes in the backseat of the rental (a blue-grey Chevy Impala), but other than that I was okay. I had a vegetarian quesadilla and after that we went home and ate banana bread since my Nonnie bakes the best stuff IN THE UNIVERSE.

Thursday
My mom did the laundry, since we were all starting to run out of clothes. Then, after Days of Our Lives, we went out to run errands. It was the first day we got back to Hastings, and our friend in the book department, Carmen, freaked out when she heard what happened. She almost started crying when we left there.

At United, I dropped a dollar into the bucket of the Salvation Army guy; I'd picked it up last week in the Barnes & Noble parking lot, so I felt like it wasn't mine to actually spend anyway.

In an effort to lessen the stress of my History class (just that class, none of the others), I am doing Promptober from D_M. It gives me a break and lets me write for fun, like I miss doing.

Famous Firsts

I have, somehow, gotten onto a Halo kick and started missing some of my old pups. I have tentatively decided to bring some of them back. I have a partial list of the returning ones compiled here, what's changed with them, and how I plan on handling them.

sangheil_sniper- Mort, having freed himself from his Clone Clusterfuck Plot-lock, returned to his world to fight the good fight for a while. He started missing how he'd been treated like a regular guy (mostly...) in the Nexus, and decided to move back; his apartment in the Nexus feels more like home anyway.
He remembers and acknowledges everything that happened with him before his impromptu hiatus, and will likely try to rekindle old relationships. This includes lots of apologizing for being gone so long.

dead_hausobooks and comesforthee- Scribner and Grave have been working all this time, and returned mostly out of boredom. Also because people can always use mercenary companies, and since they have a bigger ship now, they have more crew.
They will mostly be replying to other threads, rather than making their own; they exist more as supporting cast than anything.

clubsnspades- Spade left the Nexus to go work in some Haloverse, but has returned, and is now legal! Of course, this is not going to change his general disinterest in sex.
He does remember everything that went on before he left, and he'll acknowledge it, but he won't bring it up to anyone unless they niggle at him for an extremely long time. He doesn't think he should have to talk about it.

And that's all, for now.

    <lj:music>"Indestructible" Disturbed</lj:music>

I thought I'd put my two cents in on the purity ring debacle. In case you haven't heard yet, the host of this year's VMAs made a joke about the Jonas Brother's purity rings. It was just a joke, a little bit of fun. Well, Jordan Sparks gets up to announce one of the awards and makes a comment that some people wear purity rings because not all guys and girls want to be sluts. Which, frankly, is a really bitchy thing to say, and implies that people that don't wear them are sluts.

To be frank, I feel that if someone honestly needs to wear a purity ring, then they're not exactly up on the idea of keeping that promise otherwise. Point in fact is, I have never worn one of those and I've also never had sex and have not been inclined to have sex.

And really, the debate comes right back to abstinence-only education, which I have watched fail every day in my town. We have the highest STD and teen pregnancy rates, and it's no wonder; none of us have ever been educated about safe sex and even if we know what a condom is, we don't know how to use it unless our parents or the internet provided instruction. Abstinence-only is a failure, even if the people (mostly churches) that advocate it say it isn't.

To get back on the subject, the Today show had on two people that started the promise ring movement. They were incredibly indignant about the joke about the rings on the VMAs, calling it "an attack". It's saddening that these people can't a joke, that a little band of metal on their finger is such SRS BIZNUS. You don't see me calling it "an attack" when someone teases me for playing DnD or for knowing how to pronounce 'lol' and 'roflmao'. But maybe that's just me.
